Law School Lap Desk

June 1, 2010

A lap desk may not jump out at you as a must-have law school accessory. Law school admissions packets don’t typically (or ever) list a lap desk as anything you should be thinking about. And this blog doesn’t even focus on technology, it’s about making smart decisions. So, why am I about to write a blog post about the Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700?

Do you ever find yourself sitting on your couch, floor or comfy chair while working on your laptop? I do that all the time when writing blog posts or while I was writing my Should I Go to Law School? guide. Sometimes I’m just tired of sitting at my desk; other times, my cats may be asking for attention.

The problem for me and my Dell Precision laptop is that it heats up. Especially when the charger is plugged in, my computer gets uncomfortably hot sitting on my lap. I did some research online and the Logitech offering was the most promising at giving me a better out-of-desk experience.

The results? My lap desk arrived on Monday and I love it. There is a night and day difference in the temperature of my laptop and it makes working away from my desk so much more comfortable.

Some of the great features are:

  1. It has an almost-silent fan that cools your laptop. The fan has an on-off setting in case you don’t need it.
  2. It runs on USB power, so there are no batteries and nothing to plug in.
  3. It is ergonomically shaped to meet your wrists just at the perfect angle.
  4. It has a slight L-shape that provides room for air circulation and minimizes touch points on your legs.
  5. It has a speaker system that is most likely much better than your laptop’s built-in speakers.

Overall, I was enthused enough about this lap desk that I had to blog about it. I promise to return to my focus on law school decisions that make sense and feel right. But for now, please join me in relishing my new-found comfort. (If you are interested in learning more, Amazon has some nice videos and, of course, product reviews.)
